The Dragonfly Restoration Project was born in delirium when Ray McElwain, “Mac”, was “very poorly” with a Lung Infection.  

During this time when confined to his sick bed the thought kept going through his mind “When I have gone, what is there to show of my existence on the planet?”, as a consequence when he recovered, the idea of leaving a part of his personal history behind for future generations to see stayed with him.  

Being a member of the Yorkshire Air Museum and having sponsored in a small way the D.H. Mosquito rebuild, he mentioned in the Museum Restaurant the desire to obtain a retirement project of his own, preferably a Hawker Sea Hawk Jet as he had served on the first Sea Hawk Squadron in the Fleet Air Arm.  

A few weeks later Steve Hague, one of the members that had sat at the table when it was discussed announced that no Sea Hawks were coming up for disposal anytime in the near future, but he knew where there were two Dragonfly Helicopters. 

Having served on the Helicopter Handling unit at Royal Naval Air Station Lee on Solent, “this was it”.
